While the weather is decent, and nighttime shots don’t require staying up until late, let’s do something new: shoot the Austin skyline during the blue hour and later.
I’ve scheduled an RRIC ramble for Sunday evening, February 23, 2025, at 6:30 PM.
The plan is to shoot from two locations:
Doug Sahm Hill in Butler Metro Park
The top of the Palmer Events Center parking garage
We’ll start in Butler Metro Park, on the hill (Doug Sahm Hill) overlooking Town Lake. Sunset is at 6:25 PM, and it should be fully dark by 7:15 PM. Feel free to show up early and enjoy the view. You could even walk down to the Stevie Ray Vaughn statue. After a while we can head to the parking garage for a different, elevated view of downtown.

While there is parking along Riverside, it can be challenging finding an empty spot. The Palmer Events Center garage is usually a safe bet, and has been $10 for a number of years (in my experience). Note that there is a concert (Itzhak Perlman recital) that afternoon, but I am expecting (hoping?) it to be cleared out by 5:00 PM. I can’t locate any events at Palmer for that day. Therefore I am optimistic that parking won’t be too painful.
Here’s a google map view of the area:
Access to the Palmer Events Center garage is available on Barton Springs Rd or W. Riverside Dr. Note that a left turn from Barton Springs Rd might be a bit tricky, but it can be done if traffic is not too bad.
Enter the parking garage and park near the west end. Exit the garage and walk around Palmer to get to the park.
Another great thing about using this platform: you can comment on these posts, or ask questions. Don’t be shy!
